Golf News

March to June

Our March game at Gainsborough Greens was washed out .
Ocean Shores was our April game and 25 players enjoyed a fine but very damp course. Glenn Cooper was the winner on the day and for the second time this year so our handicapper Eric will well and truly have to nobble him to give the rest of us a chance

In May , we played Mullumbimby. The course has recovered beautifully and was an absolute joy to play. 20 players enjoyed a bacon and egg burger breakfast before teeing off and a delicious lunch after the game. Darryl (Ozzy) Barlow , one of our new members , was successful on the day and won the souvenir shirt.

In June , twenty players played a 4 person Ambrose at the challenging Palm Meadows course. Winners on the day was the team of John Koning, Damian Parsons, Gary Rowland and Wayne Rogers (Snr) with a 5 under total from the team of Eric Cocks, Steve Hall, Garry Cootes and Wayne Rogers (Jnr) 3 under par.

January –  Parkwood International Golf Course

Parkwood International Golf Course was our first travelling game for this year.
A full complement of 24 players attended and enjoyed a challenging round.
Parkwood, although shortish in comparison to some of our other venues, is a thinking man’s Course. A driver from the tee is not always the best option as some of our longer hitters found out.
Winner of the round was Glenn Cooper with Damian Parsons runner up.
Next game is at Gainsborough Greens near Coomera in March.

November –  Emerald Lakes Golf Course

November saw us playing at the challenging Emerald Lakes Golf Course which abuts the Championship Royal Pines Course. We played a single stableford and some very good scores were recorded. Winner on the day from a count back from Damian Parsons was Garry Cootes both on 45 points ( Garry’s handicap will need to be drastically reduced). Third with 42 points was Wayne Rogers (Snr) Our December and Christmas breakup game was an ambrose game at Murwillumbah Golf Course. Although dreadful weather was predicted, nineteen players got through without rain really interrupting. Winners of the shirts for the day were Darren Fuller, Warwick Sharpe and Wayne Rogers (Snr) from new member Steve Hall and Damian Parsons with Wayne Rogers (Jnr) and John Needham third The first game in January 2019 will be at Pottsville on Jan 20 at 8am

September –  Woolgoolga’s Safety Beach Golf Course

Was the destination of our annual weekend away trip this year. Only 15 players took advantage of a terrific trip. It was the first time our group had used Damian’s new 24 seater A2B bus. Very comfortable.

On Saturday we had a later than usual start because the club championships were being played. So by playing a three man Ambrose event, we were able to suss out the various difficulties and nuances of the setup. Winners of Saturday was the Bird- Cocks- Cooper combination who used their $75 prize to try to win a fortune on Keno that night.
Sunday was the individual Stableford event. Winner with 42 points was Wayne Rogers (Senior) Runner up ..Rob Irvine 41 and third place were Jonas Flanagan and Owen Cornwall with 37. The biggest winner on the day, however, was Trevor Bird who bought the winner in the Calcutta.

Our next game is at Riverlakes on October 21.

May 20 – Robina Woods (Palmer Gold Coast)

Being a tough course with a high Slope rating, we played a two person Canadian Stableford. The combination of Jonas Flanagan and Paul McGavin proved way too strong for all the other pairs. Paul recorded an exceptionally good 5 over par and Jonas wasn’t too far behind him.
Runners up for the day were Eric Cocks and Owen Cornwall.

Our June game was to take us to Mullumbimby, where we had a bacon and egg roll for breakfast before teeing off. New Handicapper, Peter Donnelly, decided that this match would be a championship round. After a steakburger lunch, winner of the day was Peter and our Club Champion for 2018 was Paul McGavin.

We are proud to be able to use the excess from our fundraising to assist local worthy causes and charities. In the six months so far this year, we have donated almost $1500

I’ve been a bit remiss this year sending in our Touring golf reports.

This is a quick synopsis of events so far this year.

Colonial Golf Club in February: We played a Two Man Ambrose. The course had suffered a bit from the recent heavy rain. Winners were Trevor Bird and Wayne E Rogers from Rob And Adam Irvine.

Palm Meadows Golf Club in March: A single Stableford event using our new 2018 revised handicaps. Most players struggled on a beautiful but taxing course. Winner on the day was Trevor Bird on a count back from Damian Parsons and Rob Irvine in third.

Byron Bay Golf Club in April: Single Stableford with readjusted handicaps produced better results. The course was in wonderful condition and those attending had a great day. Winner: Damian Parsons on a count back from Wayne E Rogers and Owen Cornwall in third place.

Saturday 16 & Sunday 17 September – Golf Day Kooralbyn Valley Golf Club

On the weekend of the 16-17 September the touring golfers made the trip up to Kooralbyn Valley golf course to play both days.
We had been urged by one of our regular club entertainers, Dave Barry, to come up and have around at the recently reopened course at which Dave is a member.
We were not disappointed. Although very dry, the course proved to be very tough and nobody who played in the club fixture scored well. We did however, keep a record of our scores and play our own in-house game. The winners of the Saturday comp were Eric Cocks and Peter Donnelly, who each received a Kooralbyn shirt, runner up Glenn Cooper  got a cap.
Our accommodation was very good as the resort is now part of the Ramada chain.
On Sunday we played a Four man Ambrose and Dave Barry played with us to help out and get to know our group better. He is a very good golfer and I’m sure he helped many of the groups play from a mor desirable position.
The winners on the day were Trevor Bird, Eric Cocks, Gary Rowland and Owen Cornwall.
It was a great weekend and we will be sure to visit Kooralbyn again one day Wayne K Rogers

Next Game. Robina Woods (or now called Palmer Gold Coast) in May.

Sunday May 21 – Golf Day Ballina Golf Club

On Sunday, May 21 twenty two members travelled to Ballina Golf Club. Our tee-off time was delayed by over an hour which meant that we were forced to have lunch after 9 holes. Nevertheless, the course presented itself well and although a little sticky in places, we finished a very slow round by 3:30.
The winner of the day was Wayne (Junior) with a very well compiled 43 points, followed by Garry (Scooter) Cootes.
There were three NTP’s, two of which were won by Wayne (Senior) and the other by Steve Envuig.

Next game to be played at Burleigh Golf Club on 18th June.

Sunday November 20 – Golf Day Surfers Paradise

Twenty-three players saddled up for the Nov. 20 game at Surfers Paradise. We had great weather and the course presented very well….a big improvement from last year when several greens were undergoing renovation. Some really good scores were recorded, but the best was by our dodgy handicapper, John Koning with 44 pts. Runners up were Darren Logan and Steve Schofield with 43 pts.

Our next game is the Christmas party at the Pottsville Golf Club on Dec.11.
Breakfast at 8am followed by golf and lunch.
Please advise Scooter if you are attending for catering purposes.

Sunday October 16 – Golf Day Murwillumbah

Murwillumbah presented a course in wonderful condition for us on Sunday, October 16.
Nineteen members took advantage of a great day to play. We welcomed new member Gary Rowland to our ranks.
The slick greens proved to be our downfall, for although we negotiated the fairways well, putting was a problem! Many of us had way too many 3 putt greens ( sloping, undulating linoleum seems a fair comparison) However the winner of the day with 42 points was Glenn Cooper with only one 3 putt green. Runners up were Owen Cornwell with 42 and  Garry “Scooter” Cootes on 40. Creditable efforts by Ralph McGee, Gary ” Jungle” Robertson and Wayne Rogers “Senior” with 38 Nearest the pins were won by Scooter, Glenn and Jonas Flanagan.

Next outing is at Surfer’s Paradise on November 20.

September 2016 – Golf Day Tenterfield

The touring golf club made the journey up the range to the Tenterfield Golf Club for our September. We stayed at the Bowls Club’s accommodation which was very reasonable.

On Saturday, we were also able to join into the Golf Club’s own competition as well as play our own game. It was a bit confusing for the locals when two players named Wayne Rogers appeared on the screen. The winner on Saturday was Gary (Scooter) Cootes and Darren Logan second with Wayne Rogers Jnr, third.

Sunday was not promising, weatherwise, but we played a two man ambrose event over 13 holes before the rain closed in. The winners of that event was Trevor Bird and Wayne Rogers Snr at even par.

Next game is Murwillumbah on October 16
